I am building a major website (About 30MB), and I want to be able to host it free until I get the kinks out and such. After that I%26#039;ll be happy to pay the $20 or so dollars a month. I don%26#039;t want any forced adds or banners either, it needs to look very clean for several presentations first. I%26#039;ll only need it for a couple months at most.
Also, registering a domain name seems to be around $10 a year. Is that about the average? I can%26#039;t really complain about that price, but just wondered.

My personal preference is hosting the website yourself. Not only do you get to control the website, the only downtime is if your computer goes down or your connection gets shot, and if the website is getting say 10K hits a month, you won%26#039;t need to host with someone and can save money to focus on developing the site. You can use a dns redirector to link your registered domain to your local IP.
